We come back from our vacation to a completely different household: the oldest one, the middle one and the eldest's partner have been in charge for more than a fortnight. The food in the fridge looks unfamiliar, bought from unknown stores. The kitchen table resembles the centre of a boiler room stock fraud operation, with computer screens everywhere and power cords dividing the space at hip level. Below the sink, the dog and the cat are fighting.
âThey fight?â I say.
âYeah, this is normal now,â the middle child says.
The canine traps the feline, by the rear entrance. The cat rears up on its back legs and nips the dog's ear. The canine flicks the cat away and pursues it around round the table, avoiding cables.
âNormal maybe, but not natural,â I say.
The feline turns on its spine, assuming a passive stance to draw the dog in. The dog takes the bait, and the feline digs its nails into the dog's snout. The dog backs away, with the cat sliding along, hooked underneath.
âI preferred it when they were afraid of each other,â I say.
âI believe they enjoy it,â the oldest one says. âIt's not always clear.â
My wife walks in.
âI expected the scaffolding removal,â she notes.
âThey said maybe wait until it rains,â I explain, âto make sure the roof is fixed.â
âAnd I said I didnât want to wait,â she responds.
âYeah, I told them that, but they never showed up,â I say. Scaffolding costs a lot, until you want it gone, at which point theyâre happy to leave it indefinitely at no charge.
âCan you call them again?â my spouse asks.
âI will, right after âŠâ I reply.
The sole moment the canine and feline cease fighting is in the hour before feeding time, when they agitate in concert to push for earlier food.
âStop fighting!â my wife screams. The animals halt, turn, stare at her, and then roll out of the room in a snarling ball.
The pets battle on and off all morning. At times it appears to be edging beyond playful, but the cat has ample opportunity to escape through the flap and it returns repeatedly. To get away from the noise I retreat to my garden office, which is icy, left without heat for a fortnight. Eventually Iâm driven back to the main room, among the monitors and cables and the children and pets.
The only time the pets are at peace is before their meal, when they agitate in concert to get food earlier. The feline approaches the cabinet, settles, and looks up at me.
âMiaow,â it says.
âDinner is at six,â I say. âIt's only five now.â The cat begins to knead the cabinet with its front paws.
âThat's the wrong spot,â I say. The canine yaps, to back up the cat.
âSixty minutes,â I declare.
âYouâll cave in eventually,â the oldest one observes.
âNo Iâm not,â I insist.
âMeow,â the cat says. The dog barks.
âAlright then,â I relent.
I give food to the pets. The dog eats its food, and then goes across to watch the cat eat. When the cat is finished, it swivels and takes a casual swipe at the canine. The dog gets the end of its nose under the cat and flips it upside down. The feline dashes, stops, turns and strikes.
âEnough!â I yell. The dog and the cat pause briefly to look at me, before carrying on.
The next morning I get up before dawn to be in the calm kitchen while others sleep. Even the cat and the dog are sleeping. For a few minutes the sole noise is me typing.
The oldest oneâs girlfriend walks into the kitchen, ready for work, and gets water at the counter.
âYou rose early,â she comments.
âYes,â I reply. âIâve got a photo session today, so I need to get some work done, in case it goes on and on.â
âYouâll enjoy the break,â she notes.
âIndeed,â I say. âMeeting people, saying things.â
âHave fun,â she adds, striding towards the front door.
The light is growing, showing a gray day. Foliage falls off the large tree in armfuls. I see the tortoise in the room's corner. We share a sad look as a fighting duo starts to make its slow progress down the stairs.
