A valiant railway employee who stepped in to save travelers during a multiple stabbing attack on a express train has suffered critical injuries, authorities stated on Sunday.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows the employee trying to stop the attacker as the train traveled between a city and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities declared a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several people have since been released from hospital.
A witness filmed the individual brandishing a large knife and being shot with a stun device as he faced officers on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "End my life, kill me."
“This awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous employee of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by specialist personnel,” stated a high-ranking police official.
Rail associations were swift to praise staff and call for more action. A labor official said he would be “seeking immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and police to ensure that we have the strongest possible support, resources and robust protocols in operation”.
A different association leader encouraged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine safety, to support the affected workers, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.
The train driver who halted the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He did not halt the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly challenging for the emergency services to reach, but he continued going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost waiting,” explained a association official.
Authorities stated they received the first distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness recounted at first thinking if the event was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from individuals' expressions that it was real.
Authorities have stated there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a terrorist attack and have asked the public to provide with any additional information.
Rail services on the impacted line are expected to have disruption until the following day, with passengers recommended to defer their travel where possible.
Individuals with details that could assist the investigation are encouraged to contact police by texting a designated number with a reference code.
