Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located many other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say early analysis suggest the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they commented.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
