In a tragic development, one of the victims lost at the Heaton Park synagogue attack is believed to have been fatally wounded by armed police officers.
The chief constable of Greater Manchester Police stated that a forensic expert has provisionally determined the victim succumbed to a bullet injury.
“Overnight, we have taken advice from forensic specialists before full postmortem examinations scheduled for later today. The expert indicated that preliminary findings show a victim would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury.”
The assailant, Jihad al-Shamie, was not carrying a firearm, and all discharged rounds were by authorized firearms personnel at the scene.
It is believed the deceased was part of the group behind the synagogue door trying to stop the attacker from entering the building.
“Thus, it appears that subject to additional analysis, the wound may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the necessary rapid response taken by our personnel to bring this vicious attack to an end.”
The two victims who lost their lives during the synagogue incident in north Manchester on Thursday had been named as 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz.
These individuals lost their lives when a car was used to ram into the grounds of the local Jewish place of worship, then stabbed worshippers in a six-minute rampage that ended only when police with firearms fired upon him, ending his life at the door of the temple.
Three others were seriously injured in the violent act on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish year.
Watson said, “We have also been advised that one of the three victims currently receiving treatment sustained a firearm injury, which is mercifully not life threatening. Officials think the two individuals were near each other behind the synagogue door, as attendees showed courage to stop the assailant from gaining entry.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are directed toward the affected relatives, and the wider community, impacted by this incident across Greater Manchester and beyond. Specialist officers are offering aid and assistance for all of those directly affected, including our brave first responders.”
Police named the attacker as Shamie, thirty-five, a British citizen of Syrian descent.
Local law enforcement reported that three other people – two men in their 30s and an older female – had been arrested “for alleged involvement in planning of terrorist activities”.
