Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
