Sean Combs is set to face a US district judge in New York City this Friday to receive his sentence after being guilty verdict this year on charges related to prostitution.
Following the two-month court case that wrapped up in this past July, the jury found Combs not guilty of the most serious accusations of sex trafficking and racketeering. However, the jury, however, convict him on two counts of moving individuals for commercial sex acts.
The presiding judge now holds the job of setting the punishment. Court activities are planned to begin at 10am eastern time.
The accusations against Combs of influencing two former partners into intimate meetings with substances involving hired escorts. If found guilty on the gravest offenses might have led to a life in prison.
Upon his acquittal of those allegations, he reportedly dropped to his knees in prayer. His lawyer commented that he had “received his life back”.
Nevertheless, the findings of guilt he was given each still carry a possible of ten years behind bars under the federal Mann Act, which prohibits moving across state borders to facilitate prostitution.
Prosecutors characterize the conduct as major violations, whereas the legal defense has rejected the charges as “fallback” charges that ought not to have proceeded.
Sources indicate that Combs plans to talk personally to the court prior to the sentence is announced, despite not testifying in the legal proceedings.
Via a motion lodged last week, his lawyers asked that he be permitted to appear in “civilian attire” at the hearing, like he had during the proceedings when he wore sweaters and collared shirts.
“The sentencing proceeding holds significant importance for Sean Combs,” the letter noted. “He desires to face the judge, make a statement, and speak in the most respectful and proper way possible.”
Various punishments remain under consideration, as both prosecution and defense have offered suggestions based on federal penalty standards, though the ultimate ruling rests with the presiding judge.
Prosecutors is advocating for a minimum of over 11 years behind bars – that’s 11 years and three months – calling Combs “showing no remorse” and emphasizing threats and aggression that those who testified described.
Defense lawyers are requesting a maximum of just over a year, which including credit for time served would permit Combs to exit prison by the end of 2025. They contend that his sentence has already been enough for what they say was consensual sex with hired performers.
Probation officials, meanwhile, determined that the guideline range might amount to as much as 87 months.
