Unbeatable A Thing of the Past: Why India's Test Match Legacy Lies in Ruins

India's surprising 0-2 series loss to the Proteas in the just finished red-ball series has left the team reeling.

Earlier this week, South Africa inflicted upon India a record defeat in terms of runs, against all odds. This represented South Africa's first series win in the subcontinent in a quarter-century and the host nation's second defeat at home in just one year after a 12-year invincible streak.

The momentum built over the past six months has almost disappeared and the futures of multiple squad members - along with head coach Gautam Gambhir - now hang in the balance.

Initial Hope Disappears

The young team's impressive performance in the UK this summer, under a different skipper, indicated a smooth transition post the almost concurrent departures of stalwarts R Ashwin, Sharma, and Kohli.

A facile 2-0 triumph over West Indies at the commencement of the domestic season enhanced that perception, until the South Africans came and inflicted a crushing loss.

The home side were somewhat unlucky that captain Shubman Gill got injured very early in the first Test and was ruled out in the series. Yet that does not excuse or justify the squad of the highly disappointing display in both Tests against the opposition.

Several established players took a hit, and several players hoping for lengthy Test careers were exposed as still inadequate - technically or mentally - for the Test cricket.

Concerning History

It was the second clean sweep on home soil endured by the Indian team in just over a year. In 2024, unfancied New Zealand had secured a remarkable 3-0 win which effectively cost the hosts a berth in the Test championship finale.

The fresh failure to the Proteas threatens to derail India's chances of qualifying for the decider of this cycle also.

After being third in the WTC rankings ahead of the matches, the side have been relegated to number five. Although nine more Tests are yet to be played, a majority are against the Aussies. Usually, competing on home turf would be a huge advantage - including against the strong Australian side. But the debacles against the Kiwis and the Proteas provide no basis for that confidence.

Causes of the Fall

India's frailty in the longer format has been significantly highlighted. That said, the reason the team have fared so badly in Test matches on home soil lately is continues to confuse.

In the 21st century, India were regarded as invincible in Test cricket at home. Under sweltering weather and on surfaces that assisted spinners and benefited their players, India brooked no opposition. A rare failure, such as in 2012-13 against England, was seen as an exception.

Today, India look to be beatable at home.

Against the Kiwis in 2024 and the Proteas currently, the home side were beaten at their own game. The pitches they prepared to help their style backfired spectacularly, as rivals exploited them better, surpassing the home team's players when it mattered most.

What's Gone Wrong?

Some suggest that the Indian team is floundering at home because local wickets have been changed from turners to pace-friendly pitches to train the squad to perform better in foreign conditions.

A few mention that the Indian Premier League (IPL), in which many overseas players take part, has removed the surprise and difficulty subcontinental pitches would present to them before.

While there is validity in each argument, it fails to account for why India's performances at home have witnessed such a sharp fall.

Various Shortcomings

Many past stars point to a multi-faceted challenge, not just a couple of reasons.

Experts and participants have identified various flaws following the team's embarrassing defeat to the South Africans: underestimating the opposition, poor preparation, questionable picks, excessive self-belief, regular alterations of the playing XI, and emphasizing white-ball over Test cricket.

This was clear in the displays of the squad.

Players such as Rishabh Pant and Jaiswal, of whom great things were anticipated, paid for their lack of application, while Sai Sudarshan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Dhruv Jurel - who were aiming to establish their position in the squad - fell short in skill and mindset, paying a heavy price for their nonchalant approach.

Only a handful - Ravindra Jadeja, Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Siraj and Washington Sundar - fulfilled their talent and reputation - but not well enough to win matches.

Leadership Under Fire

The analysis targeted just the players - the selection panel and support staff were also criticized, spurred on by distraught fans and vocal past stars. At the centre of the examination was team coach Gambhir.
