The female victim who was stabbed in the neck during a random assault near a bus shelter in Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The victim, aged 34 years, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
Djeison Rafael, 21, appeared before Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the victim's passing charges were upgraded to include murder.
The force said officers would be around the city centre through Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, who is described as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, athletic shoes and rucksack.
The stabbing happened near Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand the motive behind.
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, recounted paramedic and police activity when she finished her work period around 10 PM on Friday.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, and said some of her colleagues heard a commotion at about 21:00.
"Many co-workers use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham quite frequently visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he stated.
"She doesn't drive employed at major concert locations... considering a totally random act [happened], understandably, it's horrible."
